In stand your ground states: 32% Increase in firearm homicide 68% of cases the victim was unarmed 79% of cases the assailant was not assaulted nor presented with a life or death scenario In any other scenario, our government & law enforcement would be trying to stop or prevent whatever is going on. However I think this last statistic really explains why we’ve willingly done this to ourselves: White-on-Black homicides were ruled justified (11.4 percent); Black-on-White homicides were ruled justified (1.2 percent).

George Zimmerman's lawyer never claimed SYG. It was a straight up self defense case. When you shoot someone who's kneeling astride you and beating your head on the concrete, we tend to call that self defense. It's "innocent until proven guilty"----and if the state can't prove malicious intent, the citizen should be free. It's weird that John Oliver, a Brit, doesn't really understand the concept.

And make them serve time in prison and/or do community service and be of help to the society? Also the killer lied that the men came at him when in fact they were running away... The burglars were not a threat while they were running away and police was already coming for them.

@Mike B. I don't think vitue signaling is nearly as bad as accusing someone of being mentally ill for virtue signaling, that smacks of a deep hatred for both anyone who expresses vitue and anyone suffering from psychological conditions that you don't understand, or perhaps it is a projection of your own psychological state that you would accuse someone else of being in a "dark, desperate place" because they questioned you. Why do people have a problem with virtue signaling anyway? Perhaps I've misunderstood the term but it seems to me that even if you question someone's motives, you have still stated outright that their point of view is a virtuous one, or at the very least that you think that they think their point is a virtuous one, so regardless of their reasons for stating it, shouldn't the merit of their point take president? It seems like the kind of thing you might say if you wanted to attack someone's motives before addressing the content of what they're saying in an attempt to discredit them. I see nothing wrong with that person's question, certainly nothing that would warrant your bitter, passive agressive response. Furthermore "removing non-cinformists" is not the same as killing criminals. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to hurt someone who is stealing from me but the way you phrased that indicates that you believe non conformity is akin to criminality. Anyone who tries to change the system for the better could be called a non-conformist; such as the first people to ever setup a pride parade, or the first people who fought for civil rights. If you believe that the success or failure of a society is measured by the ability of its people to conform to potentially unjust laws and regulations then do you also believe there can be no change in a society and its laws unless that change is approved by its leaders and lawmakers? Civil rights only achieved what it did after many illegal protests were held. Should all those people have been removed "in the most expedited way as practical"? And if you believe that all criminals should face death simply because it is expedited then do you also believe that rehabilitation is a waste of time? That once someone is a "non-conformist" they are beyond redemption? Where precisely do you draw the line, if anywhere? Should a little girl caught stealing from a penny candy pick'n'mix be gunned down like the filthy nonconformist she is? Should a man who parks an inch over a parking bay line be instantaneously snuffed out for daring to make a mistake? What crime is small enough for you to consider an option besides immediate destruction? Don't feel obliged to answer any of these questions, and please don't thank me for seeking your opinion, I really don't care want you think! :) I'm mostly doing this for a screenshot to put on reddit, also to hopefully make the first commenter smile and feel a little better about your needless comments regarding their mental health, and to make me feel better about it too. I actually do have diagnosed issues so I'm coming from a place of experience when I tell you that you're an ignorant, angry little man.

    4. Mike B.

@-- THANK YOU for seeking my opinion! :) Your question smacks of Virtue Signaling... That should be an important topic to bring up with your new therapist! Stay on your current meds until you've gotten improved professional council tho!!! To answer the question. The success or failure of any organized society is only within the abilities of it's member to conform to that society's laws & regulations. If members of the society are unable to conform (breaking into homes, stealing, rape, murder), the ONLY way for that society to continue to exist is by removing non-conformists in the most expedited way as practical. Good luck with your mental health! Resorting to Virtue Signalling is a dark, desperate place to be for someone!

This is a lie. The law actually states that you can use no more force than what is necessaryto defend yourself, if deadly force is necessary, then you are justified in using it. You also need to have a *reasonable* fear that the assailant will cause you grievous bodily harm or death. Someone coming at you with a knife fits both those criteria. It's sad that people will read your comment and just believe it despite the fact that they could just google it.

Ok take two seconds to internalize that. 1...2 OK, Someone can feel however he wants but that doesn't give any rights to SHOOT at someone. US people really need to understand what they are talking about, FRIGIN GUNS! The whole objective of guns and arms in general are to KILL... To Kill! Wtf, we are on the XXI century why are we still talking about this. What is the whole point of having a f**** gun under you pillow, to "defend yourself"? What are you going to defend yourself from? No weapons needen! Are you so Self-absorbed on you so called "freedom" and pride that you can't understand that by allowing guns you are lowering your quality of life and safety so much that you can be compared with countries who are at war? Absolutely ridiculous, things like this make me proud to live in Latin America. Honestly I'm not even concerned at this point anymore, what happens up there doesn't affects me but as a person living on the earth, all this meters makes me so terrible sorry for you. Poor poor americans. 🙄

Instead of "That bitch has a gun" I instead am just gonna say fuck that bitch. For the fact that she hated of the Scrub Jay. My best friend was a Scrub Jay and I'm not lying. When I moved to Florida I was dealing with very bad depression due to not knowing anyone down there and having to leave all my friends and family behind. And it was a Scrub Jay that helped me get over my depression. As one day when my window was open to my bedroom a Scrub Jay fly into my room and landed on my shoulder and stayed there for over an hour. And from that day on almost every single day he would do just that fly into my room and hang out with me. He didn't do it for food because he was some welfare bird as she called it or because it wanted to rob and murder me. When I ended up moving back to Massachusetts that Scrub Jay was literally the only thing I was sad to say goodbye to. As I sure as hell wasn't sad to be leaving that heat the shitty ass and dangerous drivers I dealt with on the road. The terrible littering of trash I saw everywhere. And all the scumbag pet owners who just kicked their poor animals out of their houses for no reason other then them being utter morons who don't understand that if you don't bother to spay your cat then no shit it's gonna spray piss all over your house. Witch resulted in me adopting 5 stray cats getting them spay and neuter and then talking them back with me to Massachusetts as pets.

@BenJamin Croft I don't even know what i should say to this. Let's make it easy. I'll choose my words as i feel appropriate. If you feel my choice of words was inappropriate you may feel free to point that out and i will listen to what you have to say. If you make a good argument i might even change my choice of words. That's just common courtesy. But all you have for me is your subjective feeling about what quantity the word "many" describes. And sorry that's just not good enough. I'll stick to my original wording. Now, while this conversation was quite funny, i'm starting to grow tired of it. So unless you fire off some particulary entertaining bullshit or manage to bring an actually good argument to the table i'm done with it. By.

@KingQwertzlbrmpf Then next time use words like few, less, some or _not_ many. Because last time I looked 30 < 70. And according to the CDC, almost every major study on the issue found that Americans use their firearms in self-defense between 500,000 and 3 million times a year.

@BenJamin Croft I'm starting to realize that it's not just willful ignorance that's driving you. It's also simple thickheadedness. You read something that you considered offensive. It was mainly offensive to you because of your difficulties with detecting nuance. Then i specifically pointed out the nuance that you overlooked and now, instead of acknowledging your mistake and moving on you, and it seems intentional to me, fail to understand words. Let me spell it out for you. "many" is not "most". I guess i should give you credit that the word "many", if used as a noun, is commonly used to describe the majority. However, in my post i used the word many not as a noun but as an adjective. And as such it simply means "a larger number of". Maybe 30% is not a large enough percentage for you to qualify as "many", although it seems to me like you are just squabbling over words to avoid admitting fault. But just in that case let me tell you, I was refering to the 30%. Also, and just as a side note, do you think 30% dead people for unjustified reasons is a reasonable price to pay for 70% dead people for justified reasons? I'd call that fucking stupid wildwest mentality. It's the "kill them all let god sort them out" idea. Do you think that's reasonable? But this again brings us to an interesting point about the american cultural mindset. The obsession with "winning". In the american cultural mindset "winning" tends to be an overreaching goal in everything. Be that sports, job, school, doesn't matter. And the winner takes everything and the loser is not worth anything. Personally i think that this is an extension of the so called "american dream". Of course, and to quote George Carlin here, "they call it the american dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."

    5. BenJamin Croft
      BenJamin Croft
      16 päeva tagasi

@KingQwertzlbrmpf According to John Oliver only about 30% of those "...fucking stupid wild west mentality." situations happen. So when you say "Many Americans", you are actually referring to the 70% of justified Stand Your Ground situations, ie the 120lb woman shooting the 250lb man raping her, as an unhealthy relationship with violence and guns and a fucking stupid wild west mentality. Again, why did you say such a narrow perspective about Americans and guns in the first place? Knowing full well the statement you made is a dead end?

The Pilgrimage In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.[22:1] O mankind! Fear your Lord. Lo! the earthquake of the Hour (of Doom) is a tremendous thing. [22:2] On the day when ye behold it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will be delivered of her burden, and thou (Muhammad) wilt see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but the Doom of Allah will be strong (upon them). [22:3] Among mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge, and followeth each froward devil; [22:4] For him it is decreed that whoso taketh him for friend, he verily will mislead him and will guide him to the punishment of the Flame. [22:5] O mankind! if ye are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then lo! We have created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh shapely and shapeless, that We may make (it) clear for you. And We cause what We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed time, and afterward We bring you forth as infants, then (give you growth) that ye attain your full strength. And among you there is he who dieth (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the most abject time of life, so that, after knowledge, he knoweth naught. And thou (Muhammad) seest the earth barren, but when We send down water thereon, it doth thrill and swell and put forth every lovely kind (of growth). [22:6] That is because Allah, He is the Truth and because He quickeneth the dead, and because He is Able to do all things; [22:7] And because the Hour will come, there is no doubt thereof; and because Allah will raise those who are in the graves. [22:8] And among mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light, [22:9] Turning away in pride to beguile (men) from the way of Allah. For him in this world is ignominy, and on the Day of Resurrection We make him taste the doom of burning. [22:10] (And unto him it will be said): This is for that which thy two hands have sent before, and because Allah is no oppressor of His slaves. [22:11] And among mankind is he who worshippeth Allah upon a narrow marge so that if good befalleth him he is content therewith, but if a trial befalleth him, he falleth away utterly. He loseth both the world and the Hereafter. That is the sheer loss. [22:12] He calleth, beside Allah, unto that which hurteth him not nor benefiteth him. That is the far error. [22:13] He calleth unto him whose harm is nearer than his benefit; verily an evil patron and verily an evil friend! [22:14] Lo! Allah causeth those who believe and do good works to enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow. Lo! Allah doth what He intendeth. [22:15] Whoso is wont to think (through envy) that Allah will not give him (Muhammad) victory in the world and the Hereafter (and is enraged at the thought of his victory), let him stretch a rope up to the roof (of his dwelling), and let him hang himself. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth!. [22:16] Thus We reveal it as plain revelations, and verily Allah guideth whom He will. [22:17] Lo! those who believe (this revelation), and those who are Jews, and the Sabaeans and the Christians and the Magians and the idolaters - Lo! Allah will decide between them on the Day of Resurrection. Lo! Allah is Witness over all things. [22:18] Hast thou not seen that unto Allah payeth adoration whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the hills, and the trees, and the beasts, and many of mankind, while there are many unto whom the doom is justly due. He whom Allah scorneth, there is none to give him honour. Lo! Allah doeth what He will. [22:19] These twain (the believers and the disbelievers) are two opponents who contend concerning their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads, [22:20] Whereby that which is in their bellies, and their skins too, will be melted; [22:21] And for them are hooked rods of iron. [22:22] Whenever, in their anguish, they would go forth from thence they are driven back therein and (it is said unto them): Taste the doom of burning. [22:23] Lo! Allah will cause those who believe and do good works to enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will be allowed armlets of gold, and pearls, and their raiment therein will be silk. [22:24] They are guided unto gentle speech; they are guided unto the path of the Glorious One. [22:25] Lo! those who disbelieve and bar (men) from the way of Allah and from the Inviolable Place of Worship, which We have appointed for mankind together, the dweller therein and the nomad: whosoever seeketh wrongful partiality therein, him We shall cause to taste a painful doom. [22:26] And (remember) when We prepared for Abraham the place of the (holy) House, saying: Ascribe thou no thing as partner unto Me, and purify My House for those who make the round (thereof) and those who stand and those who bow and make prostration. [22:27] And proclaim unto mankind the pilgrimage. They will come unto thee on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every deep ravine, [22:28] That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate. [22:29] Then let them make an end of their unkemptness and pay their vows and go around the ancient House. [22:30] That (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the sacred things of Allah, it will be well for him in the sight of his Lord. The cattle are lawful unto you save that which hath been told you. So shun the filth of idols, and shun lying speech, [22:31] Turning unto Allah (only), not ascribing partners unto Him; for whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and the birds had snatched him or the wind had blown him to a far-off place. [22:32] That (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the offerings consecrated to Allah, it surely is from devotion of the hearts, [22:33] Therein are benefits for you for an appointed term; and afterward they are brought for sacrifice unto the ancient House. [22:34] And for every nation have We appointed a ritual, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He hath given them for food; and your God is One God, therefor surrender unto Him. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the humble, [22:35] Whose hearts fear when Allah is mentioned, and the patient of whatever may befall them, and those who establish worship and who spend of that We have bestowed on them. [22:36] And the camels! We have appointed them among the ceremonies of Allah. Therein ye have much good. So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines. Then when their flanks fall (dead), eat thereof and feed the beggar and the suppliant. Thus have We made them subject unto you, that haply ye may give thanks. [22:37] Their flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good. [22:38] Lo! Allah defendeth those who are true. Lo! Allah loveth not each treacherous ingrate. [22:39] Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory; [22:40] Those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: Our Lord is Allah - For had it not been for Allah’s repelling some men by means of others, cloisters and churches and oratories and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft mentioned, would assuredly have been pulled down. Verily Allah helpeth one who helpeth Him. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty - [22:41] Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah’s is the sequel of events. [22:42] If they deny thee (Muhammad), even so the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A’ad and Thamud, before thee, denied (Our messengers); [22:43] And the folk of Abraham and the folk of Lot; [22:44] (And) the dwellers in Midian. And Moses was denied; but I indulged the disbelievers a long while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My abhorrence! [22:45] How many a township have We destroyed while it was sinful, so that it lieth (to this day) in ruins, and (how many) a deserted well and lofty tower! [22:46] Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear ? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind. [22:47] And they will bid thee hasten on the Doom, and Allah faileth not His promise, but lo! a Day with Allah is as a thousand years of what ye reckon. [22:48] And how many a township did I suffer long though it was sinful! Then I grasped it. Unto Me is the return. [22:49] Say: O mankind! I am only a plain warner unto you. [22:50] Those who believe and do good works, for them is pardon and a rich provision; [22:51] While those who strive to thwart Our revelations, such are rightful owners of the Fire. ٨

@identity element This wasn’t a very egregious instance of it, but what I meant was the media often selectively reports or highlights certain aspects of a story to shed a certain light or imply something, knowing full well what they’re doing, in order to misrepresent a story for views and clicks. I read a story recently where the headline was something like “Black Woman Found Hanging in White Roommate’s Garage.” You’d probably assume the white roommate killed the black one, and this was yet another instance of very incendiary race motivated violence. Nope, the girl hung herself and committed suicide in the garage, and the roommate wasn’t even home at the time. It’s a very devious, manipulative practice I see constantly, similar to clickbaiting.

Maybe the father of four was drunk, he was in a bar after all, and the intoxicated guy had a kid. So what if the story was "intoxicated man shot and killed in dispute over dog sizes" and "father of one comes home and shoots his neighbor for playing loud music." Does that make it any better? Just because they're using rhetoric to make their point more effective doesn't make their point invalid.
