2 days after back surgery, some jackass in the nursing home came in my room and tried to pull me out of bed. Then he said, usually, I just log roll you. The whole experience was horrible. Bad water, bad beds, then they tried to send me home with a ton of oxycodone. They kept everyone medicated.

My grandmother was in a nursing home for a few weeks to recover from a heart surgery. I found it appalling that they were put in a room that was maybe 8x8. This room was for TWO residents. For entertainment they had a SHARED TV. I couldn't believe anyone would take a loved one there and leave them. These places are unbelievable.

When my grandmother required at home care, my grandfather - a WWII vet of 4 years - paid thousands of dollars out of pocket every month for her for 10 years, and then for himself for the last 2-3 years of his life. And then he paid for her for two years after he died until their bank account ran dry. This system is ridiculous.

In sweden 3% of the national goes into this. In Germaby 1%. And in germany there are places where are two stocks were handled by one person. Since the big privatization it get so worse that if a person needs someone to help at drinking sometimes they send them to a hospital and give her liquid infusion. That' s horrible. We are one of the most thrichest countrys on the damn planet and that is how we deal with the unluckier one.

I’m a caregiver and I make $11/hour working 60-70 hours every week. I’m often left by myself with all 25 of our clients, sometimes for my entire 14 hour shift. Caregivers are underpaid and overworked (which results in poorer care for the clients). I couldn’t even go home early or get a day off after finding one of my clients dead on his bedroom floor. My coworkers and I also deal with clients verbally abusing us, sexually harassing us, and sometimes physically harming us, which results in resentment and yet again poorer care. Nursing homes, group homes, etc are a mess through and through. Something needs to be done but, at this point, I’m not even sure what. Both the staff and clients are in bad, bad shape. They could start by hiring more staff, and paying them what they’re worth, or at least hiring qualified caregivers (gasp!), but that’ll never happen. These poor old folks are doomed.

Spoken like someone who has never worked in a nursing home. Low staffing doesn't happen because nursing homes don't care. It happens because of decreasing reimbursement. Nursing homes lose money on every Medicaid patient, more if they are managed care which is an increasing percentage. They barely make money on Medicare patients, again less if they are managed care. Most nursing homes are barely breaking even if they are making money at all. There is a real risk of a nursing home closure crisis in the very near future. The administrative burden on nursing homes, especially during the pandemic but before as well, has increased exponentially, so a increasing portion of the money has to go towards documentation instead of care. This is all because of the GOVERNMENT'S REQUIREMENTS, not because nursing homes love to document. Nursing homes have become a dumping ground and solution for all of society's failures. Nursing homes have nowhere to discharge people who don't meet level of care, but again the GOVERNMENT has failed to provide resources to help the homeless in communities. Not saying nursing homes are perfect, but the staff there work their tails off and give more to their patients while ignoring their own families than outsiders will ever know. Outsiders have NO IDEA how hard it is to run or work in a nursing home. This piece is sensationalized. Rather than slinging more mud at nursing homes, look deeper at the societal reasons for the problems. Lazy journalists only look at the surface.

This video was recommended to me after I watched a how-to video on evacuating an assisted living facility. It was a video recommended to me by my teacher at the 5-week class I'm attending to get my nursing assistant certification. We ran out of time to watch it during class, which is filled past capacity with people who, like me, have no interest in working as a CNA long term but are simply trying to get into nursing school. Because the class size is too large, we will each get 8 days of clinicals instead of 10 and we don't have time for things like learning how to safely evacuate our place of work. Did I mention that we live in an area that has been struck by wildfires 4 times in the last 4 years? The first of these years - the Tubbs fire - residents of an ALF were abandoned by the nursing staff. Perhaps their class didn't have time to watch the video, either.

My father has Lewy Body Disease at 57. I'm only 25 and he's been disabled for almost 5 years now. I had to drop out of College, and leave my job. It's an extremely difficult job because he becomes very violent and delusional. He will fight me when I try to feed him or give him his meds. The measly $500 bucks I receive every two weeks goes straight into our bills. My mother is doing all this work for free and babysitting my nephew on the side. I just don't trust anyone else to treat my father better than we can. We aren't perfect, this disease completely destroys your loved one. I don't know what I'm going to do because I don't want to have to put him in an assisted living facility to be abused but I have to think of myself. Am I going to spend my entire youth caring for my father? I also want to live...

My first job was as a carer. I would travel with another carer to do house calls. On my first week I was asked to do an overnight with no training. The day to day pay was about £15 an hour, which seems good, but most clients are booked in for 15-30 minutes, and the unpaid drive time between could be anywhere between 10 minutes to 1hr 30 minutes at the point they thought to expand to a different town, with no staff in that area so we had to travel there on shift, and if it wasn't a double call, only one of us would be paid. I think since I left they legally have to pay for travel time now which is good. They would also schedule their time slots like so: Person A) 14:15 - 14:45 Person B) 14:40 - 15:05. Giving no time for travel. It was crazy, I thought so many times that I was just going to up and die in a car crash with the way the people I worked with drove. 80mph round narrow country lanes where you can't see who's coming. We lifted off the ground at some point after going over a bump. Also overtaking a LORRY on a LONG BEND on a thin country road. Thank God there weren't any oncoming cars. I still avoid country roads at all costs knowing the kind of drivers who use them. I've had to report colleagues for neglect of clients. Some people are so cruel that the fact they are called carers baffles me. It's no wonder though, they hire anyone who applies to compensate for the high turn over of staff. I do miss the clients, but the job is just awful, it's no wonder the care is so poor. After basically braking my back in the job going to homes unequipped to safely do the work, I switched to retail. Retail is heaven in comparison. It was bliss to find out I was able to take breaks where I could just sit and eat food. Something needs to change for sure in the care system. I'm so scared of ever having to put my parents in care one day. I'll avoid it for as long as possible.

I work in a nursing home and this hits home so hard bc it's all true. How to brag on myself but all of my residents love me and I can only hope that someday if I end up in a place like where I work I have a worker who's as compassionate and caring as I am because God knows there's way too few ones like me and too many nasty abusive uncaring ones. I work 3-11 and we're extremely understaffed so I have 12-14 residents to care for. This involves putting to bed, changing, passing out and setting up supper, some I have to feed, and doing my documentation.. so do the math. It ends up being about 15 minutes per resident. For the entire 8 hour shift. That's just not right

And just for the record, medicare and Disability benefits will cover the costs of putting young adults with physical handicaps and neurological disabilities in group homes for the disabled but they won't pay for programs for those people to work, be independent members of their community and get health care at their own homes, even though the former is more expensive than the latter in the long run.

Things I learned from watching this video: 1. Resident Dumping - a practice by rotten aged care facilities whereby the patients are inappropriately evicted because the facility would make more money from a patient with Medicare than a patient on Medicaid 2. California did not properly punish a woman with an annoying voice who failed to meet the health and safety standards required to run an aged care facility 3. Nursing homes are severely understaffed in the US to the point where at least one location has a single nurse for 22 patients and can't possibly hope to provide the care needed to all of them in a single day, and those nurses feel ashamed of that fact. 4. It's really hard to make jokes while discussing the suffering of real people in situations that they have no control over. Put the plate away, John, this is not the time to be talking about ornamental dinnerware.

Thank you so much for featuring this issue John! This is a serious and deadly problem in this country and no media outlets or politicians about it. Families, unfortunately, can no longer stay home and take care of their loved ones 24/7. However, nursing homes are overcrowded and understaffed. Then there are the predatory private nursing homes of which you speak. We have many distressed people bring their loved ones with dementia to the ER with baseline systems. In such a situation, we cannot admit them because there is no acute issue, just their baseline issue. Theydon’t meet the criteria for admission in that instance. Therefore, they get sent back home in the same dangerous situation they were in in the first place.this has got to stop! It’s dangerous and inhumane to the patient! Thank you again!

Had case workers go by their home 3-5 times a week to do some cleaning, shopping and get the meds bought and organized. It’s saved the state and federal government money. My mom, my mom's cousin and I do full time care for my 97yr old grandma at home. I wish John had talked more about cdac workers. Cdac guidelines are ridiculous as far as what they pay for and how little that pay is. We need to take better care of our elderly in America, be that nursing homes, assisted living or helping elderly at home.
